The 39.6km long structure, which would easily cross the English Channel, links the centre of the port city of Qingdao in eastern China’s Shandong Province with the suburb of Huangdao.
Built in just four years at a cost of £5.5bn, the six-lane road bridge is supported by more than 5,200 columns and was designed by the Shandong Gausu Group.
It is expected to carry over 30,000 cars a day and will cut the commute between the city of Qingdao and the suburb of Huangdao by between 20 and 30 minutes when it opens to traffic later this year.
Officials insist the bridge is strong enough to withstand a magnitude 8 earthquake, typhoons or the impact of a 300,000T vessel.
